Eastern Sierra Climate & Communities Resilience Project

The Eastern Sierra Climate & Communities Resilience Project (ESCCRP) is a watershed scale forest restoration effort that Plumas Corporation has partnered with the Inyo National Forest (INF) and other stakeholders to plan.  The project will work to restore 55,000 acres of INF lands back to within their natural range of variation surrounding the resort destination of Mammoth Lakes.  In doing so we will create more resilient landscapes, fire adapted communities, and provide a safer environment in which our firefighters can work effectively under increasingly challenging conditions.

ESCCRP Stakeholder INFO

How We Got Here

The Sierra Nevada has endured over a century of inadvertent mismanagement beginning as far back as European settlement has record.  From stopping the use of indigenous burning to heavy sheep grazing and resource extraction, road building and development, and  a century long campaign that convinced America that fire was the enemy.  Our forests are out of balance and in dire need of restoration.

Opportunities & Challenges

Literally, mountains of work lay ahead in order to restore forests across the Sierra Nevada landscape to a more resilient state.  A wide variety of opportunities and challenges lay ahead from public education to a serious need for biomass utilization technology in the remote Eastern Sierra.  As these needs become more clearly defined, and progress underway gets traction, you can learn more and follow our work  at the Eastern Sierra Wildfire Alliance website.

What's the Plan

Plumas Corp has been awarded a generous grant from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to begin  rallying the troops to get the project planning started. Planning efforts in 2021 will yield proposed actions for the project area and a Request For Proposals (RFP) for environmental survey work and associated documents for the NEPA process.

Turning wildfire into mildfire....

Scientifically driven forest restoration is complex.  It not only incorporates fire science, ecology and forestry, but includes hydrology, wildlife biology, recreation, and numerous other natural resource-related disciplines. Our goal is to work with all partners and stakeholders to insure we utilize the best available science to develop robust and well vetted proposed project actions that will result in multiple benefits.
